Cambodia aims to become a new agriculture power

According to bangkokpost.com (Thailand), the national Government aims for Cambodia to become one of the world’s top ten agricultural-producing countries while contributing to broader efforts to become an upper-middle-income economy by 2030 and a high-income nation by 2050.

Overview of the Cambodian Agriculture Industry

With a population of about 16.5 million people, nearly 80% of whom live in rural areas, agriculture plays a vital role in the Cambodian economy. Cambodia’s population relies heavily on agriculture and aquaculture, which employ 49% of the country’s workforce and account for 22% of the country’s GDP. 65% of Cambodia’s population depends on agriculture, fisheries, and forestry.

Agriculture is still primarily based on rice (70%), the country’s most important export commodity and main crop. Next are industrial and supporting crops such as sugarcane (20%), rubber (7%), and perennial crops (4%). With development potential, the Government aims to make Cambodia one of the top 10 agricultural-producing countries in the world and, at the same time, become an upper-middle-income economy by 2030. It also aspires to become a new agricultural powerhouse.
